Junior Tennis Coaching Programme Summer 2025/2026

Junior tennis coaching will resume on Wednesday 4th February 2025.

Our junior group coaching programme runs alongside the school term and in term one will run for ten weekly hour long lessons. Coaching operates year round but term four and term one (the summer sports terms) are always the busiest, so if you are interested in enrolling your child please contact us as early as possible to secure your spot.

At Titirangi we follow a tennis curriculum that has been developed by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and adopted by Tennis New Zealand as its official junior programme - Hot Shots.

The Hot Shots programme has been successfully used worldwide, and it is the easiest way to play tennis. The balls bounce lower and slower, so they are easier to hit, and the courts are smaller. This means that players are able to start rallying and have fun right from the first lesson.

Your child (depending on age and ability) will start out playing in our Red group (approx. ages 5-8), here the children play with low compression red balls that are larger and don’t bounce as high as regular balls on a ½ size court, this makes getting into tennis a whole lot easier. The focus at this level is definitely on having fun while they learn basic rally, serve and net play skills along with activities that build tennis specific coordination (with and without a racket). We refer to this as the FUNdementals stage. *We also run a shorter and smaller, half hour class for preschoolers who are keen to get into the game.

From the Red group your child (approx. ages 9-11) will progress to the Orange group. In the Orange group the balls are still lower compression than a regular tennis ball, but they more resemble a normal tennis ball in look and size. At this level players are still using a reduced (¾) size court but they begin to develop groundstrokes (forehand and backhand) that enable them to maintain a rally while receiving more challenging shots, serve with improved placement, approach the net, and place volleys.

After the Orange group, and for children aged 12+, there is the Green group. In the Green group you can expect your child to be transitioning to traditional tennis, that is where players learn to serve, rally, score, and play at net in singles and doubles on a regulation sized court and with a regulation ball. Lessons take players through a progression of skill building activities that focus on building repeatable and reliable shots. Importantly, at Titirangi we want the children to be enjoying themselves at all three stages. At this age we want to be developing competitive players but our focus is not on identifyingg the next Wimbledon champion. Rather, the goal is to cultivate a lifelong love and respect for the game, and we achieve that by making sure they gain great skills, have fun, and make connections while they are here.
